TAYLOR SWIFT PREMIERES ‘SAFE & SOUND’ VIDEO FEAT. THE CIVIL WARS

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Getting backed by the amazing folk-pop duo The Civil Wars, Taylor Swift’s Safe & Sound takes a departure from her more mainstream roots into a beautiful grey area. The stunning song is the featured track from the Hunger Games soundtrack, which according to iTunes will drop on March 20th, three days before the movie opens across the country.

Personally, I think this is Swift’s best work by a landslide…

In addition to Safe & Sound, Kid Cudi’s The Ruler & the Killer, and Arcade Fire’s Abraham’s Daughter, new songs from Miranda Lambert, Once star Glen Hansard, and the Decemberists are also included on the disc.

The Hunger Games Track Listing:

1. Taylor Swift (Feat. The Civil Wars), Safe & Sound
2. Taylor Swift, Eyes Wide Open
3. Arcade Fire, Abraham’s Daughter
4. Kid Cudi, The Ruler & The Killer
5. Miranda Lambert (Feat. Pistol Annies), Run Daddy Run
6. The Civil Wars, Kingdom Come
7. The Decemberists, One Engine
8. Glen Hansard, Take the Heartland
9. The Low Anthem, Lover Is Childlike
10. Punch Brothers, Dark Days
11. Secret Sisters, Tomorrow Will Be Kinder
12. Birdy, Just a Game
13. Ella Mae Bowen, Oh Come & Sing
14. Jayme Dee, Rules
15. Carolina Chocolate Drops, Reaping Day
16. Neko Case, Give Me Something I’ll Remember

Sounds pretty amazing actually!

IAN AXEL GOES VIRAL

So, I just finished watching the new chick flick, New Year’s Eve, and it was super cute. Judge me all you want, I really don’t care. Talk to the hand cuzthafacedontgiveadamn!

Anyways, the reason I am posting this is because during the opening credits, I almost exploded with excitement to hear Ian Axel being played. Yup, I had one of those loose cannon popcorn moments.

Ian was the first artist I interviewed on this blog. His music is incredibly genuine and honest and it just warms my heart to know his fro is rising to new levels. I knew the minute that I first stumbled upon Ian that he was destined for baller status.

Support Ian Axel.

Support quality indie artists.

Support us, dammit. No, really. Get a tattoo or something.

THE MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE SONG

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

One of the most striking moments in the new film Martha Marcy May Marlene is when twisted cult leader Patrick, played by the brilliant John Hawkes, performs the song you’re about to hear. I remember sitting in the theatre in total trance mode, seduced by the magic this song creates meshed with Hawkes chapped vocals.

JAW DROPPINGLY BEAUTIFUL.

Do yourself a favor and see this movie. One of the best films of the year in my opinion. The story, cinematography, acting; all brilliant.

And to everyone posting about J.Lo’s performance from the AMAs last night: THIS is what REAL music sounds like. No props, audio backing or shirtless male props required.

ELLA MAE BOWEN IS BOUND TO EXPLODE

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

So this past weekend I saw Footloose. Yeah yeah, judge me all you want, you pretentious boneheads. For the record, I actually liked it! I thought it was a cute movie. That’s saying something considering the fact that I went into the show very skeptical. Anywhoosie, during the film I was captivated by the remake of Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero. Except unlike the original fast-paced dance version of the song that appeared in the original film, this version was stripped down beautifully in an acoustic manner that felt painfully heartfelt.

Upon further research (AKA when the movie ended I googled that shit), I discovered this version was performed by South Carolina country singer-songwriter and rising star Ella Mae Bowen. But wait, there’s more. The shocker was finding out that she’s only 15! Yup. Crazy!

The good news for Ella (and for us new fans) is that she’s signed to Taylor Swift’s record label (Big Machine). So hopefully that means they throw some dough in her direction with regards to production and promotion and we hear much more music from her soon.

Her voice is incredible!

GIRLS WHO ADD “SEXY” TO EVERY HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEA IMAGINABLE

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

The More You Know!

Girls, listen up. You can’t always add “sexy” to every Halloween costume and make it work. Example: What are you? Oh, I’m an aborted fetus. A SEXY aborted fetus! See. It ain’t always cute. Please take note and save yourself the embarrassment of looking unsexy.

Hope no one thinks my sense of humor is insensitive. Just trying to be a good samaritan and help a few ho-bags out! Please don’t bitchslap me. Thanks.

Speaking of ho-bags…

OH BRUNO

In my opinion, Bruno Mars is in a category of his own — pop soul with a twang that gets me buzzed every time. He recently recorded a new track for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I soundtrack called It Will Rain. Beautifully belting out earnest lyrics about the girl he falls hard for, he describes the pain he will have to endure if he loses the love of his life. The angst! That voice! That range!

Ah Bruno, you’ve done it again. Ladies, prepare to swoon.

DOLLY PARTON WOWS, GLITTERBOMBS, & RAPS ON ‘BETTER DAY WORLD TOUR’

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to catch Dolly Parton’s new Better Day World Tour. Words cannot express how much this meant to me. I was born and raised a few hours shy of Parton’s hometown — so coming from the same background and the same roots, I always admired Dolly on a deeper level, for her existence forced me to believe I could escape my humble beginnings and make something out of myself.

Much laughter and tears were shed!

I would also like to point out that Dolly played the violin, harmonica, piano, guitar, and flute-like-recorder-thingy-ma-bob on this tour! And not only did she perform new material she brought out the big guns too, performing classics like Jolene and I Will Always Love You.

If you get a chance, DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR.

Check out the little glitterbomb in action below!

Again, like my last concert post, these were shot on my iPhone.

MICHAEL CERA STARS IN NEW ISLANDS VIDEO FOR ‘NO YOU DON’T’ SINGLE

By: Caitlin Hoffman
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Continuing my summer song seeking, I have fallen in league with a band that was uncool before uncool was cool. I love indie quirk in all its ironic glory, but it’s nice to see a band that went along with awkward rock before it was the neato thing to do. Islands was there back in 2005, weaving jingles in Montreal, and they’re still here, technicolour and totally legit. Every touch on their guitars is a soft one, decidedly produced and smudged on its edge. The bass has a permanent residence in Chillout Town, and the drums only get excited when it’s absolutely necessary. Add the brass, and you’ve got the best tune to get you through that four hour bus ride. (And who doesn’t love songs spliced with a little saxophone?)

They carry cool without suffering a lull. When me and my man are driving in the muggiest heat, and every road we pass is in the midst of being torn apart, I need a sound that can make me look beyond the bridge and at the trees. Something that can experiment with my ears without mutilating them beyond repair.

Islands tinkers with common sounds. Mellow rock is hardly a breakthrough concept, but when I listen to them, they make it new. I feel like these guys were kids who spent time ditching class to work on art projects or read poetry anthologies.

What’s not to love?

The slight unease in their vid for No You Don’t made ripples in my psyche. And before you even ask, yes, that is Michael Cera.

TIMBERLAKE SNL SKIT YOU DIDN’T SEE

By: Maria Ciezak
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Music & comedy combined, that’s what I’m talking about!

Pop culture icons Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga made for quite the delight on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. Up first, watch JT/Gaga in ‘Liquorville’, where the pair (along with SNL great Kristen Wig) performed parodies of various songs, including Rihanna’s Rude Boy, DJ Khalid’s All I Do is Win, J-Kwon’s Tipsy, B.O.B’s Airplanes, Flo Rida’s Low featuring T-Pain, and Lionel Richie and Diana Ross’ Endless Love.

The first clip will leave you buzzed. The second, a clip that didn’t make the live cut, will keep the laughter high rolling.

HOT CHELLE RAE & CHORD OVERSTREET THROW DOWN IN ‘TONIGHT TONIGHT’

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

And by throw down, I mean getting a fake tatt & dry humping a fax machine.

HCR knows a thing or two about making a good music video. And in their latest effort, the boys toss a new summer jam into the feel good pool.

The Nashville pop rockers certainly have a quirky sense of humor (how could you not when the name of the band was taken from an “extreme fan” Chelle Rae?). This humor is showcased in the just-released video for Tonight Tonight — a song/video combo that’s totally prepped for summer roadtrips and rooftop parties.

In case you’re wondering, HCR’s guitarist Nash is Glee star Chord Overstreet’s brother, hence the cameo in the vid.

Check it out!

WIZ KHALIFA, HALL PASS & BIG BLACK DONGS [YEP, YOU READ CORRECTLY]

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

So this past weekend I saw Hall Pass. And besides the fact that I basically pee’d my pants from laughing so hard, I also realized that I have yet to write about Wiz Khalifa (his music is played during the closing credits in case you’re wondering).

But back to Hall Pass for a hot minute. I gotta say, I loved the big black dong scene. What?! Didn’t you? There was just something about Owen Wilson’s face lying next to an chocolate anaconda that just did it for me. I really needed that laugh! So thank you, Farrelly Brothers. And on a sidenote, how the hell did this film get by with an R rating?! I mean, I could understand a quick flash of penis but this was a good five second close-up.

Now, back to the music…

There’s a new jam in town and it’s left me feeling high. Listen to No Sleep, taken from Khalifa’s upcoming album, below.

RESURRECTING AN ICON: GENE KELLY [IN LOVING MEMORY OF, 1912 - 1996]

By: Caitlin Hoffman
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Fifteen years ago today, one of the brightest stars ever to tapdance its way into Hollywood flickered out. Gene Kelly is a performer who will forever live on in his energetic dance moves and unforgettable charm he sealed onto the screen. His debonair looks and boy-next-door smile made him increasingly popular through the 40’s and 50’s, and his unmatchable talent made him a wonder to watch. Some of you may only know him as Donny from Singin’ in the Rain. Some of you may not know him at all. And that is a crying shame. There are so many choreographers, singers, musicians, and ‘triple threats’ that helped build the film and music industry into what they are today, yet our generation doesn’t give them a second glance.

It’s time to break out the old dancing shoes and slap on some classic suspension of disbelief, to give these boys and girls the credit they deserve!

I doubt I would have known of Gene Kelly’s rhythmic talents if it hadn’t been for my parents. They grew me up on musicals, and Gene Kelly was a natural prime number in that equation. Perhaps such a cultured childhood is what has inspired me to carry such an eclectic repertoire of music on my iPod.

I don’t want to live in a world that doesn’t know how to appreciate what it had. We can’t let unmistakable singing and dancing talent fade away while we melt our brains with Lady Gaga.

Check out the comedic, toe tapping, leg shaking talent he has beside Donald O’Connor, another everlasting star to have faded into the cosmos.
