THE VACCINES TAKE ON TAYLOR SWIFT

By: Maria Ciezak
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

It blows my mind when covers can sometimes own originals. I must admit, the new Taylor Swift single is insanely catchy. She owns her genre, no matter what you think of her taste in lyrics and music.

The Vaccines recently covered the song at BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, and it’s amazing. This song can definitely be used as an anthem for so many people in their relationships, and it’s nice to hear a different spin on it.

THIS MADE MY DAY!

What can I say? I have a thing for underground artists. Literally!

Besides the fact that this singer is fabulous, there’s just something about this particular song being belted underneath the City of Dreams, that leaves a smile upon the heart. So damn authentic! Nothing but pure, honest emotion.

I’m completely head over heels in love with New York.

So proud to call this beautiful city home.

***I shot this on my iPhone, so excuse the quality.

And in case you missed it, check out my feature + interview with the incredible subway artist, Freddy Marx Street, HERE.

JOHNNY DEPP PERFORMS W/ AEROSMITH!

By: Maria Ciezak
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

As if we didn’t love Johnny Depp enough already, right? From movies to music, is there anything that this man cannot do? On Monday night, Johnny Depp tuned up his ax and joined the notorious Aerosmith onstage at their concert at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. They did an insane cover of Train Kept A-Rollin.

This is every media biz employer’s dream. I must say, Depp can shred.

CHER LLOYD PERFORMS ACOUSTIC ROBYN COVER ON THE STREETS OF NEW YORK

By: Rob Brayl

My heart has officially melted.

In case you haven’t noticed, UK pop is beginning to make a serious dent on American airwaves. With the explosion of Jessie J, newfound cutie patootie Olly Murs, and Cher Lloyd (among others), the Brits have never been more prevalent.

The video you’re about to see though, has nothing to do with charts or figures or popularity. It simply has to deal with raw talent, and an honesty so naked it stings.

Cher Lloyd recently took to the streets of NYC to perform an emotionally-driven, stripped-down version of Robyn’s electro-pop smash Dancing On My Own. And the results? Both beautiful and bittersweet.

Watch the stellar performance below.

KELLY CLARKSON FREAKIN’ NAILS KATY

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

As in, she nails the cover. No actual nails were involved in this performance. Sorry if you’re disappointed, but I disgress…

After seeing Kelly Clarkson live from Radio City earlier this year, I know there’s absolutely nothing the girl can’t sing. Hell, she could probably sing the phone book and somehow it would still sound purdy in our little eardrums. That’s just the kind of raw talent that runs through her veins.

Recently, Kelly put her stamp of beautiful awesomeness all over Katy Perry’s Wide Awake, her raspy vocals delivering the pop ballad in a way none of her contemporaries can.

Stunning/vulnerable/REAL. This is one pop star who never needs a facade.

fun.

One of my favorite groups out right now, fun., recently took the time to show some love to Carly Rae Jepsen as they covered her radio smash Call Me Maybe. The band performed a live, acoustic cover of the tune on Dutch radio’s 3FM, and in my opinion, it doubles the wow factor of the original.

Check it out.

JAY-Z SUPPORTS MARRIAGE EQUALITY

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Kudos, Mr. Knowles!

“It’s the right thing to do. I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back. What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”

LP COVERS BEYONCE LIKE A CHAMP!

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Not everyone can cover Beyonce like a champ! But then again, not everyone is up-and-coming singer-songwriter LP. Like numerous other artists in the business (Bruno Mars, anyone?), L.A.-based LP got her start writing songs for some pretty big names. Most recently, she helped to co-write Rihanna’s feel-good single Cheers (Drink to That).

If the vocals of Linda Perry and Stevie Nicks had a lovechild, the offspring would be LP. Yes, that’s an uberphat (I think I just made up a word) compliment!

LP’s debut five-song CD + DVD package, titled Into The Wild (Live At EastWest Studios), is set to drop on April 24th. You can also catch her television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live on April 25th.

Prepare for takeoff!

KATY PERRY COVERS JAY-Z AND KANYE WEST’S ‘NIGGAS IN PARIS’

By: Maria Ciezak
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Okay, not gonna lie, I don’t hate it. Katy Perry recently covered Jay Z and Kanye West’s Niggas In Paris, and it’s not bad, not bad at all. She performed the track in Paris for BBC Radio 1. She’s no emcee, but she puts a cute little twist on the hip hop smash. And I must say, seeing her in New York gear makes me like her even more.

Enjoy.

KELLY CLARKSON TAKES ON PARAMORE

By: Maria Ciezak
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Does this girl do anything wrong? Upon request, Miss Kelly Clarkson continues to wow us with an amazing cover of Paramore’s The Only Exception. Whether this song is her own or not, she owns it. I am continually inspired by her kick-ass attitude, astonishing pipes, and stick-to-her-gun ways. This may not be the best video quality, but the quality of her voice is always top notch. Enjoy.

JOHNNY CASH OVERLOAD, JUST CUZ

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

You can create an image.

You can sign a recording contract.

You can sell a million albums.

But talent as real, raw, and authentic as this, cannot be duplicated.

Johnny Cash is the truth. I say is, because to me, he’s still very much alive — one of those brilliant musicians that make you feel like they somehow understand your pain when they sing, their presence entering the room with the press of a button.

(The fact that he’s a certified bad ass is just an added bonus.)

Rest in peace, buddy.

RICHARD MARX COVERS MIZ KATY PERRY

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

This is crazy! So naturally, I like it…

’80s hitmaker, Richard Marx, the dude who gave us the smash Right Here Waiting, has created an acoustic cover to Katy Perry’s The One That Got Away.

Marx recently stopped by VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live to debut his version of the track, explaining: “You know, I’m just sitting listening to my iPod and I love the last Katy Perry CD… I loved the production but I heard this other really heartbreakingly beautiful song inside of [‘The One That Got Away’]. So I was really bored that day and I went in my studio and made an acoustic version.”

Go on with yo bad self, Mr. Marx.

ZAC EFRON AND TAYLOR SWIFT DO IT… I MEAN DUET

By: Rob Brayl

Zac Efron and Taylor Swift recently appeared on Ellen to talk about their voicing roles on the upcoming animated film The Lorax and ended up singing a little ditty together. A super adorable re-working of Foster The People’s Pumped Up Kicks to be exact.

Honestly, I could watch this for dayz.

Seriously. How cute are these two?! And Efron’s got a great set of chops.

ADELE IS A CHATTY CATHY APPARENTLY

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

“I am quite loud and bolshie. I’m a big personality. I walk into a room, big and tall and loud. People think that I’m f*cking miserable, they are really surprised when they meet me that I’m chatty and bubbly and kind of quite carefree really. I’m the total opposite of my records.”

–Adele in the new issue of Vogue.

And below is a pretty cool cover of Adele’s Someone Like You, performed by a subway artist here in New York. This city will always have my heart.
