POP TITILLATION: ROBYN + RÖYKSOPP

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Ring the alarm! On May 26th, Scandinavian pop heavyweights Robyn + Röyksopp will release a collaborative mini-album entitled Do It Again. And if the lead single (of the same name) is any indication of what to expect, we’re in for something spectacular. But again, not that surprising considering the fact that Robyn is known for crafting some of the most intelligent, infectious, thought-provoking pop of our time.

Robyn and the Norwegian pair will also titillate audiences this summer on the Do It Again tour. Yes, titillate.

Can’t wait!

IGGY

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Young rapper of the moment, Iggy Azalea, is out with her full-length debut The New Classic. The 23-year-old may be Australian, but judging by her Southern drawl, new listeners might mistake her for a girl from the streets of Atlanta, an obvious influence of her sound built from a mixture of Southern hip hop and T.I., who is often credited for mentoring her to stardom.

And although the album is getting mixed reviews, through 15 pop-coated tracks, Iggy makes her mark in a male-dominated field.

Walk The Line, the sparked-up opener, is a personal favorite.

Take a listen below.

THE EPIDEMICS

By: Caitlin Hoffman
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

I had a migraine when I turned on The Epidemics. By the time the album finished, my skull was screaming, and I was happy about it.

The best bands enhance your headaches. They don’t make the pain go away, but they make it better.

The Epidemics are Swedish and female-fronted, a Frankenstein built by the disembodied limbs of goth, metal, and punk rock. Though all the songs (I’ve heard) are written in English, their Facebook page is a collage of English and Swedish, reminding me passion knows no borders.

The sizzling, speedy guitars and grade-B lyrics are pure horror-punk, but not so abrasive that radio-rockers would faint. The sound is serrated, but sedated, a numbed edge on which to slide.

Waking Up the Dead was a strong first album, drawing genius (whether subconsciously or intentionally) from Die Mannequin, The Distillers, The Misfits and The Gits. The only song I could have done without is Never Grow Up, which means 90% of the album hit me the way it should’ve. That’s a brilliant ratio!

Now, they have half of their second album free to stream on The Pirate Bay- that’s how I discovered them in the first place. It will always blow me away when artists offer their art for free. They have to eat same as any of us, and yet here they are, turning their hearts into a no-pay buffet.

I’m amazed. I only hope I’ll have that strength one day.

ON HEAVY ROTATION: EMINEM FEAT. SIA – ‘BEAUTIFUL PAIN’

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

This song is f**king perfect! And before anyone asks why I support Eminem when he uses anti-gay slurs, please read THE FAGGOTRY OF HIP HOP piece I wrote HERE.

FYI: Sia (who is gay) has decided to donate all sales from this track to LGBT homeless youth in Los Angeles. Yay!

Also, I’m not sure why this is a bonus track and not a proper single since it’s the best song on the album. We’ll see if the record label realizes this in the future.

A GREAT BIG WORLD BREAKS THROUGH W/ THE HELP OF CHRISTINA AGUILERA

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

I’m speechless. When I first started BiggerThanBeyonce in 2009, my personal life was sh*t. (Pardon my French.) The plus side was that I had just moved to New York and had the chance to see and meet amazing underground artists.

Ian Axel was the first artist I ever interviewed for this little independent blog. At the time, no one knew who he was, but his music changed my life and I just knew he would go on to become a star.

That’s him on stage last week Christina Aguilera, performing a song that I’ve been listening to since I first discovered him five years ago.

It’s now in the Top 5 on Billboard.

To say that I’m blown away would be an understatement.

Axel recently spoke to Billboard on the collaboration: “‘Say Something’ was danced to on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ almost two months ago, and so many people responded to it. In that whole process, someone on our team played it for someone on Christina’s team, and we got a call that Christina wanted to record it, and then, literally a week later, we were in L.A. recording it with her.”

So happy to see powerful, genuine music getting the attention it deserves!

A Great Big World’s debut album, Is There Anybody Out There?, is set to drop on January 14th, 2014.

MILEY REGAINS RESPECT ON NEW SINGLE ‘WRECKING BALL’ [AUDIO]

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Saturday night, a day before #Mileygate, Miley Cyrus dropped her new single Wrecking Ball + the cover art for her forthcoming album, Bangerz. Of course, all of this was quickly overshadowed by her now infamous whack-a-doodle performance with creepy Beetlejuice perv, Robin Thicke.

Today, all that changes, as we place the spotlight on the new track.

After the hedonistic and controversial lead single, We Can’t Stop, one might expect a follow-up just as twerky, but what Wrecking Ball delivers is everything Miley’s newfound image is not: It’s vulnerable, understated, and beautiful. It’s a heartbroken ballad with striking force. It’s grown-up Miley without the awkward tongue flashing and creepy teddy bears.

Wrecking Ball is currently available for purchase on iTunes.

Bangerz is set to drop on October 8th.

Audio below.

JOSS

For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

After rising to fame in 2003 with her massively successful + multi-platinum debut album, The Soul Sessions, Joss Stone is back and better than ever. With the release of The Soul Sessions, Volume 2, Stone has just released the worldwide premiere of new single The Love We Had (Stays On My Mind), a piercing and powerful cover of The Dells’ hit from 1971.

All that really needs to be said is that her voice is crystal clear and potent. She owns this song completely and reclaims her throne as the heroine of soul pop.

Welcome back, Miss Stone!

NEW ELLIE GOULDING – ‘BURN’ [VIDEO]

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Ellie Goulding recently dropped the single Burn and has now premiered the video that accompanies the track, which the blonde songstress co-wrote with hitmaker Ryan Tedder. Produced by Greg Kurstin, Burn is a radio-friendly slice of electronic pop that cements Goulding as an American staple, alongside other Top 40 mainstays.

The video captures the light (pun intended) of the song perfectly, featuring visuals suffocated by endless orbs of glowing sparks.

“Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world,” Goulding sings. “We’ll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky.”

Burn will be released on August 11 via Cherrytree Records.

78VIOLET

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Introducing Los Angeles-based 78Violet!

You may recognize these striking faces as the sisters (Aly and AJ Michalka) formerly behind the pop duo AJ & Aly. Shedding the skin of their past to create a sound that’s lush with a smooth edge, the girls are back and better than ever. Six years after releasing their last LP, Insomniac, Aly and AJ are in the process of finishing a brand new album and have just released the stunning video for lead single Hothouse.

With visuals that would make any earthy-chic fashion label swoon, the video comes back with a beautiful landscape: meadows, stallions and wild flowers. (Eat your heart out, Free People!)

Note: Lana Del Rey-esque intro = actual music starts at the 3:30 mark.

Welcome back, ladies!

ROBYN DROPS GENDER-REVERSING VIDEO FOR ‘U SHOULD KNOW BETTER’

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

The random return of Robyn!

Although it’s been three years since the release of her kick ass Body Talk, Robyn has decided to release a conceptual video for U Should Know Better, her collaboration on the album with the one and only Snoop Dogg.
Not only is the video cool and original (something Robyn’s become a poster child for), the video breaks into the topic of gender, as Robyn and Snoop are replaced in the clip by youthful, cross-gender versions of themselves. Robyn is played by a young platinum blonde boy, while Snoop appears as a lanky teen girl with braids.

The video was conceptualized by Robyn and Decida, her longtime stylist and choreographer (who was also responsible for the moves seen in Dancing On My Own).

Decida wrote a press release to accompany the release, saying:

Hopefully the U Should Know Better video sparks some laughs, but also thoughts on what identity really is. Would you be the same person in another context? Does society have certain expectations of a person based on class, gender, colour, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and cultural background? How much do these expectations then affect your so-called self? I kind of like the idea that we grow up in a transnational pop cultural mosh pit were you can choose who you want to be instead. All of this is what our 2FACED1 project is about, to know identity is dependent on context and therefore is something fluid.

Robyn never disappoints! Love it!

LEANN RIMES BECOMES HUMAN ON NEW ‘SPITFIRE’ RELEASE

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

“Someone said to me yesterday that this album is like taking a knife and stabbing myself in public. And it’s true — I’m letting everyone watch while I rip my guts out. There was not an ounce of me left to put on this record. It was the most fearless I’ve ever been, in anything that I’ve ever done.

“After people have written my life for me for the last four and a half years — and it doesn’t matter whether it’s true or not, it’s what sells the most magazines that week — this was the first time I could dig into my emotions and write from this perspective, and not have to apologize for being human. A lot of people don’t see me as that, and haven’t for a long time.”

-LeAnn Rimes
On new album Spitfire

This is the most honest record I’ve heard in years. LeAnn Rimes has taken the pain of tabloid fodder and created an album that solidifies her place as one of the greatest female performers in country music. Her voice is crystal clear and her nails are sharp. Not many women could have handled the sexist double standard in this situation the way that she has. She is no longer a child prodigy but a female pioneer, tearing down the celebrity walls and revealing a vulnerable human being underneath.

Two of my favorite tracks from Spitfire below: Who We Are (tear-felt live performance) + the incredible Where I Stood following.

Painfully gorgeous!
