AN INTERPRETATION OF DARREN HAYES’ BRILLIANT ‘STUPID MISTAKE’ VIDEO

Darren Hayes is not a joke. He’s no clown, either. In fact, upon watching his just-released video for new single Stupid Mistake (my immediate favorite track on the new record, behind Cruel Cruel World), it’s apparent that Darren is an alien in the pop world — an artist who stylistically oozes self-awareness in a way only he can.
This video is simply brilliant. Darren continues to manage to do so much more with less (black and white film and a mirror; some makeup) than most big-budgeted artists. Sure, he could parade in some current cookie cutter nonsense, dishing out a video with pyrotechnics, dancers, and several costume changes, but in Darren’s world, this just isn’t necessary. The man is ahead of the game without even trying because his talent is not only genuine, it’s incredibly heartfelt.
In my opinion, it’s obvious that this video is a statement piece about the music industry. In a world where gimmicks and fake fuckery rule the scene, Darren’s brooding eyes reveal that he knows better, is better, and he’s not giving in to the bullshit.
