PERRY’S SUBSTANCE BURSTS THROUGH

Katy Perry is mostly known for her quirky personality and her edgy yet sweet tart image and lyrics. But, being the daughter of a preacher, and confessing to have a strong moral code underneath, I have always known Katy to hold a heavier substance beneath the blue wigs and sequins. And in the just-released video for Firework, that substance bursts through.

Director Dave Meyers recently told MTV that a goal of the video’s concept was to “sort of demystify the candy-colored pop icon that she’s become.”

The video was shot in Budapest and featured real people, something that both Meyers and Perry were set on.

Meyers stated to MTV: “We were both very into the idea of getting away from Hollywood and featuring real people in the video,” Meyers said. “So we featured real people; they weren’t actors. Finding two gay guys in Budapest was a challenge, because it’s not as accepted there as it is in West Hollywood. I found an actual, real couple.”

He continued: “And then in the last scene, that wasn’t 250 extras, that was 250 hardcore Katy Perry fans. Those people were jumping because they were loving life.”

“Katy was brought to tears when she met the extras,” Meyers went on to say. “And, really, that’s her. She looks like a pinup, but she’s got a lot of substance and a lot to say, and hopefully this video represents that.”
