SARA BAREILLES RETURNS WITH A BIT O’ DRAMA AND KALEIDOSCOPIC HEART

With me and Sara Bareilles, it’s an ongoing love affair. Her debut album Little Voice turned a quiet title into a screaming vocal powerhouse. There are so many female musicians on the radio that I find myself passing, and instantly changing the channel (not to bash anyone and their success, but it seems as if nowadays all you have to do to become famous is fill out an application). Sara is the one that will actually make you stop and listen. Our long distance relationship was Love on the Rocks while her musical hiatus seemed all too long, but she’s back and better than ever. New single, King of Anything, off of album Kaleidoscope Heart, is her recon mission. It’s a dropkick to the stomach to all of the assholes she’s met along the trail to fame; and let’s face it, we all love a little drama once in a while (damn, girl). Angst-ridden lyrics? Hell yes. Just goes to show, the girl won’t write a Love Song just because you asked for it. It’s almost as if she wrote the book on how to be massively aggressive yet still share your toys, while connecting it with the audience. Although I have to wait until September for the whole album, she’s already got me hooked.

What makes her so great? Besides what I’ve mentioned above, she’s a successful artist that has actual talent. Let’s be clear; I listen to and review a lot of music, and I found it hard to believe how fast I fell in love, head over heels I’d say. Sara plays her own instruments and writes her own songs; their crisp, clean, and not overdone. She does a grand job of putting together a portion of work that keeps toes tapping and the repeat buttons pressed. From the leaked drips I’ve heard, this album seems as if her voice will reflect her mood from shy and vulnerable to assured and demanding. Not to mention she is one of the best live shows in the genre (concerts sometimes change my opinions of artists, good and bad, as I am sure you would all agree). This video is very entertaining; picture a bunch of Polaroid’s forming into a short film. Intrigued?

Sara Bareilles may not be the King of Anything, but she is certainly a queen. Blast this song, if you feel like singing, or venting your aggravation about uncalled-for love advice from your girlfriends who are sick of hearing you speak, in a frisky, not-so-pop song. Haven’t heard of her but recognize her songs? Jump on board, and prepare for an unforced voice. Her swag is indeed what music needs right now, for she is far from a Little Voice.
