MARINA & THE DIAMONDS

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

With influences including PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, The Distillers, & Nirvana, one may have a WTF moment upon hearing that Marina also quotes Madonna & Britney as being two of her biggest influences. When listening to I Am Not A Robot (see video below) I immediately thought Shakira should be included in this list as Marina’s voice definitely spews a tinge of chick fire. Ya know, heart & passion, sultry tales of lost love, an exotic appeal, etc.

What’s more important though is her risk of being unafraid of doing something a bit out of the box. With her black glittered face & red rhinestone lips, one might quickly place Marina in the obscure box by her image alone — one that would never be considered commercial enough to be marketed to the pop music masses. But with the right buzz and PR, Marina could be exposed to radio and hey, if not, she can always blow up your iPod. It’s clear, that Marina is more about the art of music, instead of the art of being a mainstream success, especially if she has to contrive an image sexualizing her body to sell records.

Have a visual feast for dinner.

ON HEAVY ROTATION: ‘FACE DROP’ by SEAN KINGSTON

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

CGI animation backed with a simple message: You may have broken my heart but look at me now, ya little turd!!!

But you’re the one who said
I’d be lost without you
You had your fun, couldn’t ride this one without you baby
I see your face drop
I told you not to count me out
Cause you always tried to fill me with doubt
Saying that I looked better if I was thinner
Don’t you know you should’ve loved me for my inner?

Check out Sean Kingston’s latest music video for FACE DROP down there.

Yeah, there.

Press play!!!

DO IT!!! <--Damn, I need to calm down with the exclamation points today.

JAY-Z TALKS N WORD, RIHANNA, TEACHES OPRAH TO RAP (FAIL)

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

BK’s hubby appeared on Oprah recently and discussed some rather interesting topics (The N word, Rihanna). But it all seemed forgettable in comparison to the highlight of the evening, which happened when Jay-Z attempted to teach O how to rap. Man, we love you O but your swagger is swampy. Mad respect for trying though!

Check out a clip of the interview with Jay-Z (featuring a rapping Oprah) below.

ENRIQUE WILL MIST YOU

[Sings] ISN’T SHE LOVELY? ISN’T SHE WONDERFUL? [And SCENE]

Just what we need: more cologne “designed” after a celeb. Seriously? I’m an Enrique fan, but I think I’ll stick to my Clinique Happy. <-- It smells manly with a hint of oranges & Febreeze. Who wants to bet that he'll look exactly the same at age 60? Hairless & saying words in a whisper! Check out footage from Enrique's photoshoot (promoting his new Azzarro cologne) below.

ALISON KRAUSS & GAVIN DEGRAW BEAUTIFY CENTRAL PARK

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

Wednesday night I attended a taping/benefit concert in Central Park for Feel Free.

The concert was an event for documentarian Ken Burns’ upcoming PBS film, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea”. Performers included: Alison Krauss, Gavin DeGraw, Carole King, Counting Crows, Peter Yarrow, & Eric Benet, among others, all coming out in support of the cause.

It was the first time I had ever seen Alison Krauss live and she blew me away. As horribly Hallmark as it might sound, her voice is truly that of an angel. I found it quite poetic to be standing on dirt (something that doesn’t happen too often in the concrete jungle of Manhattan), next to gigantic trees with a history all their own, in a city known for it’s hip hop & rock n’ roll, listening to bluegrass. Krauss, without a doubt, left the audience in a trance–her voice heavily hypnotic, silencing the noise & chaos of the world that lie outside the park’s walls. You can check out a snippet of her performance below.

Gavin DeGraw, who I have met several years ago when his debut album first dropped, performed Chariot, and took the crowd to more of a feel-good state. DeGraw seems to remain unaffected–a humble fella, who besides being talented musically, has a charming sweet nature that remains a factor in what makes the singer stand out from his peers in the backdrop of popular music.

Check out this charming sweet nature I speak of, as Gavin discusses his love for nature, below.

I can’t figure out if I think this guy is the coolest person in the world or just a plain ol’ looney toon. Either way, this rocked my face off!

Ever see a dude in a wetsuit playing the guitar with great white sharks?

NO?! Well today is your lucky day, my friends.

JASON MRAZ: SMOKING SUCKS

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

“I smoked for 10 years so I know how much fear and insecurity is wrapped up in it. I also know how scary it is when you think about quitting. You might think life is gonna suck, that you’ll gain weight, or be depressed. But the fact is, if you keep smoking, you will always be out of shape and depression will be more common. To get a similar buzz, you may as well put your lips around an exhaust pipe.”

BEYONCE LENDS HALO TO LITTLE GIRL BATTLING CANCER

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

This made me cry like a baby.

First, Beyonce gave up her VMA spotlight to allow Taylor Swift a chance to speak, after a RUDE drunken 32-year-old rapper (formerly known as Kanye West) stormed the stage & interrupted her moment of glory. And at her concert this past Friday in Sydney, Beyonce used her halo to help one little girl battling leukemia to feel truly special.

Get your tissues ready. This is beautiful.

MARIAH CAREY, LENNY KRAVITZ, & BLIGE LEAVE MARKS ON ‘PRECIOUS’

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

The Oprah Winfrey-produced indie drama PRECIOUS (based on the novel PUSH by Sapphire) boosted its hopes of Oscar glory over the weekend by taking home the top prize, the People’s Choice award, at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. Slumdog Millionaire scored the same prize at the festival last year before winning the Oscar for Best Picture.

The empowering film features Lenny Kravitz (who plays a nurse) & Mariah Carey, who plays a social worker. And by the looks of things, it looks like Carey may deliver a moving performance. Besides these two musical giants, the film’s theme is a song by the name of DESTINY, performed by Mary J. Blige.

The film is set to be released in limited theatres on November 6th. You can watch the trailer to the empowering film & listen to the theme song, performed by Blige, below.

REMEMBERING THE SWAGGER OF SWAYZE

By: Rob Brayl
For BiggerThanBeyonce.Com

I have a great deal of faith in faith — that there’s life after death — because if there isn’t, why are we here? I don’t believe that just flesh and bones can contain from the point of view of physics this very real recorded energy inside of us. Whether it’s true or not, we need to believe it.

–Patrick Swayze
1952 – 2009

He will truly be missed.
